What is a Tooth Infection?

Each tooth in the human mouth contains a long, thin strand of pulp that extends down into the root of the tooth. This dental pulp contains nerves, arteries, blood vessels and connective tissue that can be damaged by decay or injury. When the pulp becomes infected or inflamed, the result is often unbearable tooth pain and, over time, the death of the tooth.

How Do I Know If I Have an Infected Tooth?

Patients with a dental infection will experience a number of uncomfortable symptoms, including but not limited to:

  •  Toothaches that don’t subside after 24 hours
  •  Tooth sensitivity to hot or cold food or drinks
  •  Discomfort when chewing or biting down
  •  Swelling near the tooth
  •  Fever
  •  A discharge near the tooth

Should you experience one or a combination of the above symptoms we urge you to see a root canal dentist right away. Endodontic treatment is necessary to relieve uncomfortable symptoms and protect the stability of your tooth after it is restored with a crown.

Root canal therapy involves the removal of the affected pulp through a gap that is created in the natural crown of the tooth. Once the pulp has been removed and the root canal has been cleaned and filled with a material to prevent further infection, our root canal specialists will seal the tooth with a porcelain crown.

When is a Root Canal Treatment Necessary?

In the center of our tooth and extending through the roots is a bundle of living tissue known as the pulp. Our pulp contains nerves, arteries, and blood vessels that keep the tooth healthy and alive. When a tooth becomes broken or severely decayed, bacteria can reach the pulp, causing an infection or an abscess to form.

A root canal procedure allows our NYC endodontists to remove the infected tissue and prevent further discomfort or the death of the tooth. If the tooth dies, then extraction is often necessary to prevent the spread of infection to other teeth and/or the jawbone tissue.

Root Canal – Comfortable and Convenient Endodontic Treatment

Few people are eager to undergo a root canal procedure, despite the fact that most people compare receiving one to having a filling placed. However, this endodontic (root canal) procedure is essential for treating cases of dental infection or abscess. In order to safeguard the health and stability of your smile, our root canal specialists can perform a safe and comfortable endodontic procedure from our NYC offices in Valley Stream and Manhattan.

What Does the Root Canal Procedure Involve?

The root canal specialist begins by administering a local anesthetic. The tooth will then be opened, allowing the dentist to remove the infected tissue from the tooth and root canals. After thoroughly cleaning the interior of the tooth, the endodontist will add a restorative filling material.

The endodontist will complete the procedure by placing a dental crown on the tooth. The crown and filling material help prevent further infection and protect the remaining tooth structure. We often use all-porcelain crowns so that the tooth looks natural following root canal treatment.
