Dentures Q & A
What are dentures?
Dentures are devices that replace part or all of your top or bottom tooth arch. A typical denture includes an acrylic base, which looks like your gum tissue, and replacement teeth mounted inside that base.
A well-made denture looks very natural and functions like your original teeth did before you lost them. Dentures have changed a lot over the years, with new innovations and technology now allowing for very cost-effective and comfortable tooth replacement.
What types of dentures are available?
Central Avenue Dental offers two different types of dentures to give you the best tooth replacement options available:
Traditional partial or full dentures
Traditional dentures, or removable dentures, have an acrylic base and prosthetic teeth. Partial dentures replace a group of teeth. The partial dentures use your natural teeth as support, and they often have metal clasps to stay in place.
Full or complete dentures replace all teeth in the top or bottom row. The denture base stays in place through suction. Upper dentures suction to the roof of your mouth and your gum ridges, while lower dentures use just the gum ridges for suction.
When you have traditional dentures, you may feel more secure about denture stability if you use a denture adhesive. You must remove and clean your traditional dentures at least once a day. Most denture wearers also need to soak their dentures in a special solution overnight as they sleep.
All-on-4 dentures
All-on-4 is an advanced system that morphs dental implants and dentures. With All-on-4 dentures, you have four dental implants (or more if needed) throughout your tooth arch. That group of implants holds your new upper or lower denture (all the replacement teeth) in position.
You don’t need to remove All-on-4: It’s permanently anchored by your dental implants. Thanks to those dental implants, the denture has superior stability. All-on-4 also helps prevent bone loss, which is the main cause of changes in facial structure after tooth loss.
When you lose teeth, it’s important to replace them for a variety of reasons. Dentures can help you look like yourself again while also protecting your oral health.
Why do I need dentures if I’ve lost my teeth?
Dentures can return your smile to its former beauty, but that’s not the only benefit. Dentures can also maintain your facial structure, preventing sunken cheeks.
You also need dentures to protect your oral and general health. Dentures prevent other teeth from moving. They can maintain your bite so you can continue eating normally. Missing teeth can cause speech changes, and dentures can help to restore normal speaking.
Big picture, you need dentures to have a better quality of life. Studies prove that tooth loss can cause a serious decline in life quality, and dentures can help you avoid that.
