Veneers Q & A
What are veneers?
Veneers are paper-thin shells of porcelain that your Central Avenue Dental provider bonds to your natural teeth. They look similar in appearance to your natural enamel and are stain-resistant.
If you fracture or chip a tooth, you might only need one veneer, but Central Avenue Dental usually recommends getting between six and eight to achieve a beautiful, symmetrical smile.
What types of issues can veneers correct?
Central Avenue Dental uses veneers to address minor cosmetic imperfections, including:
- Gaps between teeth
- Broken or fractured teeth
- Stains
- Misshapen or worn-down teeth
- Smaller-than-average teeth
You might also benefit from veneers if you have teeth that overlap or a minor misalignment.
What does getting veneers involve?
At Central Avenue Dental, getting veneers takes two appointments about a week apart.
First veneers appointment
Before moving forward with veneers, your Central Avenue Dental provider conducts an oral exam and takes oral X-rays. If you have cavities or gum disease, it’s important to address these issues first. If your teeth and gums are healthy, your provider administers a local anesthetic, numbing your mouth.
Once you’re comfortable, your provider removes a thin layer of enamel from each tooth. Afterward, they take a series of impressions and send them to a laboratory that creates your custom veneers.
Second appointment
When the dental lab completes your custom veneers, you return to Central Avenue Dental. Your provider lines up the veneers with your natural teeth and bonds them in place. Afterward, they remove any excess material, polish your teeth, and provide care instructions.
How long do veneers last?
Veneers last an average of 10-15 years, but it’s possible to extend their lifespan by practicing good oral hygiene. Central Avenue Dental recommends:
- Brushing your teeth twice daily
- Flossing before going to bed at night
- Drinking dark beverages through a straw
- Wearing a mouthguard when playing sports
- Using a night guard if you have bruxism
- Avoiding bad habits like nail-biting or opening plastic packaging with your teeth
It’s also important to visit Central Avenue Dental every six months for an oral exam and professional teeth cleaning.
